After dinner, on a slow afternoon, or while you are nearby folding washing, this is the sort of play that can begin with one tiny announcement: The shop is open. Your child decides who works behind the hut, who comes to visit, and whether the chips, fish or ice cream are being served first. You might only be asked to place an order, but they are the one running the whole seaside world.

At first, your little one may simply set up Sandy, Gully and the food. Soon, the hut becomes a stall, the chips become the order everyone wants, and the seagulls are given jobs. Some days Sandy is serving fish and chips. Other days Gully is visiting for ice cream, or the beach pieces are moved around for a new scene. Before long, the same hut keeps reopening with a slightly different story each time.
