If you love the idea of open-ended play but aren't sure where to begin, this is the place to start. Our wooden play packs bring together the open-ended favourites that work brilliantly on their own and even better combined — a wooden rainbow, building boards and semi-circles — curated into one bundle so you get a complete starting kit for less than buying each piece separately.

Wooden Play Packs: The Easiest Way to Start Open-Ended Play

Open-ended play has a lovely reputation and a frustrating entry point: everyone says to start with a wooden rainbow, some building boards, a few semi-circles and loose parts — but working out which pieces, which sizes and how they fit together is genuinely overwhelming when you're new to it. Our play packs solve exactly that. Each is a curated bundle of the open-ended pieces we'd actually recommend a family start with, chosen because they work beautifully together, and priced as a bundle so it costs less than buying each piece on its own.

These aren't random pieces thrown in a box. The combination of a wooden rainbow, building boards and semi-circles is the classic open-ended trio for a reason — the rainbow brings arches, tunnels and curves; the boards add bridges, ramps and levels; the semi-circles become wheels, hills, rockers and roofs. Together they multiply each other, so a child can build a marble run one day, a dolls' house the next and a whole small-world landscape the day after. If you'd rather build your own collection piece by piece, every component lives in its own collection — but if you want the simplest, best-value way to begin, start here.

Open-Ended Play Packs Wooden Play Bundles Better Value Together Perfect First Set

Why a Wooden Play Pack Beats Buying Piece by Piece

When you're new to open-ended play, the hardest part isn't believing in it — it's knowing what to actually buy. Buy the wrong sizes and the pieces don't work together; buy one thing at a time and the cost adds up fast while your child waits for the collection to become useful. A play pack removes both problems. You get a set of pieces chosen specifically to combine well, all at once, so the play is rich from the first afternoon rather than slowly assembled over months.

And because the pieces are bundled, a pack costs less than buying the rainbow, boards and semi-circles separately — so the easiest option to choose is also the better-value one. That's rare. Each piece is still completely open-ended in its own right, so nothing here is filler: the rainbow, boards and semi-circles would each earn their place alone. The pack simply gives you the proven combination in one go, for less, which is exactly what most families wish they'd done from the start.

Inside Our Wooden Play Packs

Our packs centre on the open-ended trio that works hardest together. The Rainbow Creative Pack brings together a large pastel wooden rainbow, natural building boards and a pastel semi-circle set — everything a child needs to build dolls' houses, ball runs, castles, bridges, tunnels and small-world scenes from day one. The Rainbow Creative Pack – Euca Edition pairs a large Euca wooden rainbow with Euca Monolith building blocks and Euca creative slats, leaning into colour gradients, sequencing and architectural building for families who want that extra layer of creative challenge.

Both are heirloom-quality and made from sustainably sourced wood with child-safe, non-toxic finishes — beautiful enough to leave on display between play sessions, and built to be passed down. Whichever you choose, the principle is the same: a curated, better-value starting point rather than a guess. If you already own some open-ended pieces, you can of course top up from the individual wooden rainbows, building boards and loose parts collections instead.

One Play Pack, Years of Different Worlds

The reason these packs represent such good value isn't only the bundle price — it's how long they stay in play. Because every piece is open-ended, the same pack becomes something completely different week to week: a colourful city skyline, a winding marble run, a bridge system, a fairy village, a race track, a puppet theatre. There's no single 'correct' build, so children keep returning with new ideas rather than outgrowing it.

It's also why a play pack makes such a strong gift. Rather than a toy that's exciting for a week, you're giving a complete creative building system a child can grow into for years — from a toddler stacking and toppling, to a preschooler building tunnels and houses, to an older child engineering elaborate small worlds. Pair a pack with peg dolls and play silks and you've handed a child both the building materials and the characters to fill entire imagined worlds of their own.

Why These Pieces Are the Classic Open-Ended Starting Point

There's a reason the wooden rainbow, building boards and semi-circles turn up together in almost every open-ended playroom: each covers something the others don't, and together they cover almost everything a child wants to build. The rainbow brings curves, arches and tunnels — bridges, caves, houses and birthday cakes. The building boards add the flat spans, ramps and levels that turn a pile of pieces into multi-storey structures and racetracks. The semi-circles fill the gaps — wheels, rockers, hills, roofs and the rounded pieces that make a build feel finished.

On their own each is wonderful; combined, they multiply. A rainbow arch becomes a tunnel only once a board bridges to it; a semi-circle becomes a wheel only when there's a ramp to roll it down. That's the quiet logic behind a play pack — it isn't three separate toys, it's one open-ended system where every piece makes the others more useful. Buying them together, chosen to fit, is how you get that system working from the very first play rather than discovering the gaps one purchase at a time.

A Play Pack That Grows With Your Child (and Makes a Lasting Gift)

One of the best things about giving or buying a wooden play pack is how long it stays relevant. The same set serves a toddler who simply stacks and topples the rainbow, a three-year-old building tunnels and bridges with the boards, and a five-or-six-year-old engineering elaborate marble runs and small-world cities. Because the play is open-ended, it isn't outgrown when a stage passes — there's always a more ambitious way to use it, which is exactly what makes the bundle such good long-term value.

That longevity, plus the heirloom-quality build and the fact it looks beautiful left out on a shelf, is why play packs make such a popular gift — for birthdays, Christmas, new babies growing into toddlers, or as a shared present siblings will actually use together. You're not giving a toy that peaks on day one; you're giving a complete creative system with years of play in it. And because it's bundled, it's a more generous gift than its price suggests.

New to Open-Ended Play? Start Here

If you're just beginning, it helps to know what open-ended play actually means in practice: toys with no fixed purpose, that a child uses to build whatever they're imagining. A wooden rainbow isn't 'a rainbow' for long — it's a bridge, then a cave, then a birthday cake. Building boards become ramps, roofs and racetracks. Semi-circles become wheels and hills. The magic is that the child decides, every time, so the same set stays interesting for years.

A play pack is the gentlest possible on-ramp because it removes the guesswork: instead of researching which pieces and sizes work together, you start with a curated set that already does. From there, most families gradually add peg dolls, play silks and loose parts — the characters and materials that turn a building set into whole imagined worlds. If you'd like to understand the philosophy first, our open-ended play hub walks through it and points you to each type of toy.

Buy the Pack, or Build Your Own?

Honestly, both are good options, and it depends on where you're starting from. If you're new to open-ended play or buying a gift, a play pack is the clear winner — it's the proven combination, curated to work together, at a better price than buying separately, with none of the guesswork. It's the simplest way to go from 'I like the idea of this' to a playroom that's genuinely set up for it.

If you already own some open-ended pieces, or you specifically want to choose every item yourself, building your own collection piece by piece makes more sense — and every component has its own home: wooden rainbows, building boards, and loose parts. There's no wrong path. The pack simply exists for the very common situation where a family wants in, wants it to work, and doesn't want to spend a fortnight researching which semi-circle set fits which rainbow.

The Simplest, Best-Value Way Into Open-Ended Play

A wooden play pack takes the guesswork and the higher piece-by-piece cost out of starting open-ended play. You get the proven rainbow, boards and semi-circles combination, curated to work together, for less than buying each separately — and a complete creative system your child can grow into for years.

Explore the packs above, then add peg dolls, play silks and loose parts over time to turn the building set into entire imagined worlds. Or, if you'd like to understand open-ended play first, start with our open-ended play guide.

Frequently asked questions
Should I start with a play pack or build my own collection?

If you're new to open-ended play or buying a gift, start with a play pack — it's the proven combination, curated to work together, at a better price than buying separately, with no guesswork. If you already own some open-ended pieces or want to hand-pick every item, building your own collection from the individual rainbow, boards and loose parts collections makes more sense. Both are good paths; the pack simply exists for the common case of wanting a complete, working starting set without the research.

Can I add to a play pack later?

Absolutely, and most families do. A play pack is designed as a starting point, not a closed set — the pieces combine freely with everything else in open-ended play. Over time you can add peg dolls and animals as characters, play silks for landscapes and dens, loose parts for small-world detail, and more boards or rainbows for bigger builds. The pack gives you a strong, proven foundation that the rest of the collection grows around.

What are your play packs made from?

All our play packs are wooden, made from sustainably sourced timber and finished with child-safe, non-toxic, water-based paints and stains. They're built to heirloom quality — designed to withstand years of play and be passed down. Specific timbers and finishes vary by pack (for example, the Euca Edition uses the distinctive Euca pieces), so each product page lists the details for that set.

What age are wooden play packs suitable for?

Play packs suit a wide age range because the play is open-ended. A toddler will stack and topple the rainbow and explore the pieces; a three-year-old builds tunnels, bridges and simple houses; an older child engineers elaborate marble runs and small-world cities. The same pack grows with the child rather than being outgrown. As always, check the recommended age on each product, particularly for the youngest children and any smaller pieces.

Are play packs a good gift?

They make an excellent gift. Rather than a toy that's exciting for a week, a play pack is a complete creative building system a child can grow into for years — and it's heirloom-quality and beautiful enough to leave on display. It suits birthdays, Christmas, or as a shared present siblings will genuinely use together. Because it's bundled, it's also a more generous gift than its price suggests, which is part of why packs are such a popular gift choice.

Are play packs good value?

Yes — that's the point of them. Each pack is priced as a bundle, so it costs less than buying the rainbow, boards and semi-circles separately. Beyond the upfront saving, the value comes from longevity: because every piece is open-ended, the same pack stays in play for years rather than being outgrown, becoming a different creation every week. For a complete, heirloom-quality creative system, a play pack is one of the better-value ways to set up open-ended play.

What's included in your play packs?

Our packs centre on the classic open-ended trio. The Rainbow Creative Pack includes a large pastel wooden rainbow, natural building boards and a pastel semi-circle set. The Rainbow Creative Pack – Euca Edition includes a large Euca wooden rainbow, Euca Monolith building blocks and Euca creative slats. Both give a child everything they need to build dolls' houses, ball runs, bridges, tunnels, castles and small-world scenes from the first play. Each product page lists exactly what's in that pack.

Why buy a play pack instead of the pieces separately?

Two reasons: cost and confidence. Because the pieces are bundled, a pack costs less than buying the rainbow, boards and semi-circles on their own. And because they're curated to work together, you skip the guesswork of which sizes and pieces combine well — a common frustration when you're new to open-ended play. If you already own some pieces or want to hand-pick everything, buying separately from each collection works too; the pack simply removes the guesswork and the higher piece-by-piece price.

What is a wooden play pack?

A wooden play pack is a curated bundle of open-ended play pieces — in our packs, a large wooden rainbow, building boards and semi-circles — chosen because they work brilliantly together. Rather than buying each piece separately and hoping the sizes match, you get a complete, ready-to-play starting set in one go, priced as a bundle so it costs less than buying the components individually. It's designed as the easiest, best-value way to begin open-ended play.
